Angel Investing Can Be Awesome…Or, a Hellish Disappointment for All
Raising from angels is a vital lifeline for early stage entrepreneurship. Without it, many companies would never see the light of day. For context, about 70+% of RevUp companies have raised from angels before we invest. Few would have made our orbit without catalytic capital to drive early growth.
I also angel invest, an experience that exists almost as a parallel dimension to my work as a fund manager. My tastes, behaviors, and expectations in one mode has little in common with the other–and honestly, that’s exactly how it should be as far as I am concerned.
I was glad to sit down recently with Andrew Kazlow on his The Diligent Observer podcast. We covered some of my fav topics, like what it takes to build a smart capital strategy, whether you’re the one raising the money or the one writing the check. We covered how the hyper-professionalism of angel investors hasn’t been kind to founders or investors. We dipped our toes into the perennial challenges founders face building a diversified capital stack and what happens when founders get twisted into the wrong kind of pretzel.
We also talked about my philosophy on angel investing, and the dangers of angel investing when the only ROI that matters to you is profit. A surefire way to end up disappointed!
Check out the episode for some hot takes and a few things I am likely to regret committing to the internet’s permanent record. Thanks for having me, Andrew!
