We Got Checks to Write!

RevUp will be in Austin at SXSW March 10-14 meeting founders and scouting for new investments.

RevUp Partner Melissa Withers will be on stage as a judge for the startup pitch competition finals, as well as holding office hours to meet with companies March 11-13 who might be a good fit for our Fund.

For starters, this page has a video and text that describes our selection criteria. But keep reading for a quick scan of what we look like in a new investment:

  • Actively investing since 2016, RevUp offers non-dilutive capital and strategic investment support to a broad range of B2B and B2C companies. We select for companies that are:
  • In the market, actively selling, and ready to grow to $10-20M in revenue in the next few years. These are companies that make and sell products and services that their customers want and need.
  • Our companies typically come into the portfolio with annual revenue of $500K - $3M
  • We also care a lot about growth rate. Our companies may need more fuel on the fire to go faster, but they not stalled out or stuck on the tracks
  • We only invest into companies that can comfortably support a revenue-based investment. if you're really early or your business runs on very low margins, a revenue-based investment just might not be a fit for you.
  • In this spirit, we invest into companies that have solid underlying unit economics and/or a path to profitability. Burning isn't always bad and there's nothing wrong with investing into growth if you have the right resources in place. But getting a company to where it can survive on its own is a good place to be!

Beyond these baseline criteria, we look for companies that have operational and cultural qualities that track with our mission and values. Through this lens, we select for:

  • A strong leadership team and proven execution ability. Our founders dream big, but they also know how to operate.
  • Teams that are ready, able and willing to build a more scalable marketing and sales engine.
  • And since we are talking about team...Since 2018, 70+% of RevUp investments have been into companies led by a woman or person of color. And many of those that weren't, were into companies where the founders were building their businesses outside networks of privilege. These are our people and that won’t change anytime soon.
